Tooth decay has become the most prevalent chronic childhood illness

Tooth decay has become the most prevalent chronic childhood illness. It may surprise you but tooth decay is five times more common than asthma and four times more common than early childhood obesity.  None of us want our children’s teeth to rot and fall out. I’m sure we’ll all agree that it’s not always easy getting them to floss and brush every day- after every meal.

To help parents overcome this huge challenge a company by the name of Gooseling has come up with interactive games designed to teach kids 2 to 9 years old some all important social and life skills. One of the games called, Cavity Dragon teaches the value of proper tooth brushing habits in an effort to combat tooth decay.

We can all envisage your daily morning struggle- getting the kids ready for school – getting them fed, clothed, and assuring their teeth get brushed. Cofounder Vicky Keston says that “When academic or social issues arise, the schedule goes out the window, and children wake the next morning tired and cranky. It’s no wonder that children’s dental health is in a crisis.”

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a complex ailment marked by excessive exhaustion that lasts at least six months and cannot be explained by an underlying medical condition. The weariness is exacerbated by physical or mental exertion and does not alleviate with rest.

Dental disease is responsible for 51 million lost school hours and 164 million lost work hours a year. Those are serious statistics that represent lost productivity for both children and their parents.

Gooseling have done a great job in helping parents train their children with this app. Here is their description in the iTunes App Store:

Struggling to get your children to brush their teeth? Cavity Dragons to the rescue!

Now Available! Cavity Dragons Pro uses vivid video game play to get kids ages 6 to 9 excited to brush their teeth. Cavity Dragons spit out fire balls onto a mouth of teeth, where children must tap food and fires. With the help of two firemen shooting toothpaste hoses, children eliminate the food before it can turn into a cavity, or the cavity can turn the tooth grey. Earn virtual gold coins and explore four screens packed with action and fun including a slap jack card game.

Children learn the importance of keeping teeth and gums clean while having fun:

-Quickly eliminate food and fires off the teeth with two fireman armed with squirting toothpaste hoses

-Make food disappear quickly, or the tooth gets a cavity and turns gray. If you get too many grey teeth, you lose, all the teeth fall off the screen, and you can start over.

-Clean the teeth with your nifty fireman on his skateboard toothbrush

-Earn a second fireman holding floss between his hands to floss the teeth

-Play a fun cavity dragons slap jack card game

-Select from three playing levels – easy, medium or hard

I’m sure all parents will agree that one of our biggest challenges is getting our children to brush their teeth. When faced with a child refusing to brush for a ton reasons, it can be very easy to just let it slide. However by not brushing teeth at the appropriate times you will be risking regular

cavities with serious implications for your children’s health.

None of us want our children to go through the pain and discomfort of having cavities.  We must remember that the adult teeth are below the baby teeth already at birth, therefore cavities must be filled, otherwise they risk spreading to the permanent adult teeth.
