Dentistry for Today's Family

Our Services

Hygiene

Regular hygiene visits are important! Aside from checking for cavities, maintaining extensive and often expensive dental work, keeping your dental warranty on treatment valid, fresh breath, and maintaining healthy gums, there are many other compelling reasons to visit your periodontal therapists at Waterloo Smiles.

You may have heard the recent reports in the media there is a mountain of evidence linking gum disease to stroke, heart attack, diabetes, respiratory disease and premature birth. If you think you are exempt from gum disease and you have no worries, think again. It is often referred to as the silent killer of your teeth because it causes no pain, and can only be detected and maintained by your dentist and hygienists/periodontal therapists in its most destructive phases.

If you are one of our many patients who never miss a scheduled maintenance check… Well done! If not, CALL NOW, we are waiting for you!

Endodontic Procedures

What makes a Root Canal Necessary?

The most common factors contributing to a need for root canal treatment are: physical irritation caused by deep decay or a very large filling, severe gum disease, or trauma (such as a physical blow to a tooth or a constant striking of a tooth in the opposite jaw that traumatizes the tooth). Regardless of the initial cause, the tooth pulp (nerve) becomes irritated and infected. Bacteria grows, which causes pressure and pain (sometimes accompanied by swelling of the face). Sometimes the deterioration of the pulp happens so gradually that little pain is felt. Eventually the bacteria can destroy the pulp. As this happens, the bone surrounding the tooth may become infected and abscessed, which may lead to the destruction of the bone surrounding the tooth.

If a Root Canal Treatment is necessary, what is the procedure?

  1. When necessary, an anesthetic is used to numb the tooth and surrounding area. The tooth may be isolated with a rubber dam, which confines the treatment area and protects the mouth from bacteria and chemical agents. An opening is made through the tooth into the pulp (nerve).
  2. We carefully remove the diseased pulp (nerve). The root canal area inside your tooth is cleaned, enlarged and shaped (then, depending on your individual case, the root canal and pulp chamber may be permanently filled and sealed).
  3. A temporary filling is placed in the opening of the tooth until the next visit. In some cases, the tooth may be left open in order to allow the infection to drain. We will decide what is right for your case, and do whatever is necessary to assure your comfort.
  4. At the next appointment, we sterilize the inside of the tooth to remove the bacteria. Throughout the root canal procedure, we may take x-rays to ensure that all of the infected pulp is removed and that the walls inside the canal are smooth.
  5. To complete the process, the root canal and pulp chamber are permanently filled and sealed.
  6. Finally, the tooth is restored to chewing function.

Dental Veneers

Dental veneers are one of the most exciting and revolutionary advancement in Aesthetic Dentistry. Dynamic results can usually be achieved within a week or ten days to correct somewhat misaligned, broken, or discolored teeth. Customarily, veneers are preferable to full crowns when there is adequate remaining tooth structure to support the restoration.
Dental veneers are a blend of art and science that enables a skilled practitioner to achieve a sensational effect. For many patients unhappy with their smiles, porcelain veneers may be a dream come true!

At Waterloo Smiles, dental veneers are one of our passions, and you will be amazed how they can change your life. For a private consultation, please contact us.

Veneers are custom-made, custom-fitted, very thin pieces of porcelain which are bonded to your natural teeth. Veneers are an excellent way to correct minor tooth anomalies such as chips, stained or discolored teeth, and to alter length or size of the teeth with minimized risk to your natural tooth structure.

The procedure can usually be accomplished in two appointments. At the first appointment, the teeth will be prepared, which is a matter of taking away a small amount of tooth structure, shaping the teeth, and taking an impression of the prepared teeth. The impression is then sent to a specialized laboratory where the veneers are hand-crafted by technicians whose art and skill is creating restorations that look and feel like natural teeth.

Dr. Husain will take digital photographs of your teeth to accurately communicate the color to the laboratory. In addition, Dr. Husain will fabricate acrylic temporary veneers which will be temporarily cemented in place for approximately three weeks while the laboratory fabricates the final restorations. Not only are these a temporary aesthetic solution, they are also fabricated to help communicate the new size, shape and form of the teeth. At the second appointment, your new veneers will be bonded in place and your “new” smile completed.

Fillings

At Waterloo Smiles, we use a product called composite resin to do our fillings. Also called white fillings, composites are designed to match the natural appearance of your teeth. Composite fillings are also used to restore decayed teeth instead of mercury silver fillings that tend to darken teeth and leak over time. Composite fillings are prepared and placed in just one visit.

Crowns

A crown, often called a cap, is an artificial cover that restores a decayed or damaged tooth to its normal shape and size. It is useful for protecting the structure of a tooth that is cracked or broken. A crown can also be used to change the shape of a tooth, to correct a bite or cosmetic problem, or to replace existing broken or poor-fitting crowns. We will always highly recommend a crown to be placed on any back tooth that has had root canal treatment. A crown may be made of gold, other metals, porcelain, or a combination of the two.

Bridges

A fixed bridge can replace one or more missing teeth. It consists of one or more replacement teeth attached to crowns that are placed on two or more surrounding support teeth. Along with replacing teeth, the fixed bridge helps restore the normal function and proper position of your bite. A fixed bridge is made of various metals, porcelain, or a combination of the two.

Partial Dentures

Dr. Husain may recommend a partial denture if you do not have strong enough teeth on either side of your missing teeth to support a fixed bridge. A partial denture helps to preserve the life of your remaining teeth. It consists of a removable metal framework with one or more porcelain or plastic replacement teeth attached. Unlike a fixed bridge, a partial denture can be taken out.

Implants

When natural teeth are lost or are not able to be saved, quality of life can often be improved and enhanced with the integration of dental implants and implant-retained teeth. Cosmetically-pleasing replacement teeth that not only look, but feel and function like natural teeth, can be fabricated and custom-fit to accommodate different types of dental implants. These may be single-tooth implants, or a series of implants to replace multiple missing teeth, followed by the fabrication of dentures or partial dentures that fit over the implants.

There are also options for “fixed” restorations for multiple implants; these prosthetic options are a more permanent solution and are not removable by the patient. Dr. Husain works very closely with each patient’s implant surgeon to determine the best treatment options for each patient considering dental implants. This interoffice communication is vital in order to achieve the highest level of function and aesthetic appeal.
